An Indianapolis police K-9 is recovering after he was stabbed while trying to apprehend a suspected burglar over the weekend.
The incident happened shortly before 8 p.m. Friday when officers responded to a report of a break-in at an auto shop, the Indianapolis Star reports. When officers reached the scene, they told the suspect to surrender and entered the building.
The suspect was at the auto shop's front desk, and officers again ordered the suspect to surrender. When the suspect didn't comply, Ringo, a department K-9 on the call, was released.
The suspect stabbed Ringo as the dog moved in, and police opened fire. The suspect was struck, but he got back to his feet and walk toward the front desk.
Police ordered him to stop before a Taser was deployed, and he was subdued. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Ringo was taken to an emergency veterinarian and was released, the department stated Tuesday in a social media post. No officers were hurt in the incident.
The shooting is under investigation by the department's Critical Incident Response Team.
